A Warm Refuge Above Madrid’s Rooftops
The vibrant, fast-paced energy of Madrid was crying out for a place like Makáá. Located on the spectacular rooftop of the Thompson Hotel, in the iconic Plaza del Carmen, this elevated hideaway invites you to gaze over the rooftops and feel the pulse of the city—while time slows down in a serene oasis. Under the creative direction of designer Patricia Bustos, fire and embers become the heart of the concept, using light to convey a sense of deep human warmth.
The Pure Magic of Fire
On a rooftop, the sun rules by day. But when it sinks below the horizon, the real magic begins. Light rises from the lower plane, washing the space upward in 1800K tones that verge on amber. The result is a high-contrast scene that conjures beauty and stillness in equal measure.
Light that Flows Through the Space
Hidden within curtains, embedded in furniture, or fused with the architecture, light traces gentle paths with the quiet confidence of a true protagonist. Inspired by the shifting nature of fire, we designed integrated floor rails with 360° emission luminaires arranged in an organic rhythm. This grazing light highlights the texture of the paving and the subtle weave of walls and textiles.
The Power to Shape Atmosphere
Each area of the restaurant demands its own lighting intent. Sofa zones are framed by soft, ambient perimeter light, allowing the central fire feature to take visual prominence. This seamless integration into the architecture and furniture achieves total cohesion throughout the project.
The Presence of Craftsmanship
A space this singular deserved bespoke pieces. The decorative luminaires were developed alongside local artisans, bringing their ancestral craft into dialogue with contemporary technology. Blown glass in orange hues interacts with natural light and creates a warm welcome at dusk. Ceramic, metal, glass, and wood merge into unique elements that complete the aesthetic and soul of Makáá.
Light as Craft: Precision and Detail
In the bar area, we implemented a curved rail in brushed bronze finish, chromatically integrated with the space’s structure. This system houses 2200K spotlights with narrow optics, creating a rhythm of light and shadow that harmonizes with the décor. Every detail was considered to enhance the atmosphere through lighting: uplights stylize the columns, circular forms are accentuated to strengthen their presence, and above the tables, handcrafted metal pendants with brushed finishes blend into their surroundings.
The Soul of the Project
At Makáá, light evokes the essence of fire under the stars. True luxury is watching Madrid light up from afar. A project where light is not something you see, but something you feel—a space where time chooses to slow down.
