A Woven Tapestry of Light
Light Tellar is a lighting installation designed by Light & Studio as a tribute to the thousands of artisans who, over the centuries, have worked the looms of the Royal Tapestry Factory in Madrid. It is a project that bridges tradition and innovation, connecting the legacy of craftsmanship with a new era of creativity. The installation links the historic factory—active since 1721—with the LOOM coworking space, a hub for innovation now housed within its walls.
This piece unfolds as a visual narrative interweaving past and present, where light becomes both material and message. The installation stretches across the ceilings of several rooms using opal methacrylate tubes suspended at varying heights, creating a suspended lattice that echoes the texture and tension of woven fabrics.
Each tube is embedded with digital LED strips, individually addressable and programmed point by point, allowing for dynamic sequences and immersive lighting compositions. Through three controllers with 64 universes each, linked to real-time image rendering software, the entire atmosphere of the space can be precisely shaped.
All lighting is integrated into a DALI system, enabling both digital and architectural luminaires to be managed from a single touch screen. The system also adapts to natural daylight throughout the day, supporting users’ circadian rhythms.
Light & Studio developed over 50 lighting scenes, both static and dynamic, inspired by nature, the color palettes of various global cities, and—as a highlight—a flowing sequence that reinterprets the most frequently used colors of the Royal Tapestry Factory over the past 300 years. A symbolic gesture, transforming light into a living thread of history.
Tradition, technology, and design converge in this immersive project, where lighting is not merely a functional element but a sensory experience that bestows identity, memory, and atmosphere to the space.
