Lighting historic buildings is a great challenge and an even greater responsibility. At Light&Studio, we approach these projects with deep respect and affection for our city. In this case, we were responsible for the lighting design of Abanca’s new headquarters in the former La Aurora Insurance building, located at Paseo de Recoletos 4: a property of heritage interest to the Community of Madrid.
Our objective was to give the building a visual identity, accentuating the architecture and highlighting the decorative elements that give personality to this emblem of Madrid’s eclecticism.
The sun tells a story by day as it shines on the facades, casting shadows and shifting color temperatures. At night, we tell a different story: we highlight the building’s most interesting lines using a very warm color temperature of 2300K, aligned with our circadian rhythms and the city’s aesthetic.
From the glazed iron gate, we capture the passerby’s gaze and direct it to the upper cornice, along the two pillars that frame the balconies. This visual journey is achieved using projectors with highly concentrated beam optics that direct the light vertically. The composition culminates in two corbels with organic motifs that are perfectly defined, adding a decorative touch to the overall view.
Inside, a subtle dynamism is created by a suspended light fixture that spans the entire height of the building. Using a lighting control system, we have configured various scenes where each element illuminates and fades organically, creating an elegant dance of light.
All the lighting is carefully directed and controlled to bathe the façade exclusively, preventing it from being lost in the sky and thus minimizing light pollution.
A project where invisible light engages in a dialogue with the historic structure to offer Madrid a new nighttime image, one that is more human, respectful, and mindful of its own heritage.
