A luminous journey through identity
AlterEcho is an immersive installation conceived by Miriam Muñiz for El Observatorio, the creative laboratory of Light & Studio. A mutable space, designed to explore and reflect on the power of light—not only as a spatial tool, but as an emotional catalyst.
The installation unfolds as an introspective journey, structured in three distinct phases. A personal path where light not only reveals, but questions, unsettles, and ultimately rebuilds our perception of the self.
1. Presentation of the Self. Order
The experience begins in a composed space of clarity and precision. A laser scans the body, projecting a clean silhouette on the wall—an ordered, conscious representation of our identity. Here, light organizes space and offers a moment of orientation. It is the beginning of the ritual.
2. Confrontation with the Shadow. Chaos
The narrative breaks. Order dissolves into a dissonant choreography of colour, flashes and distortion. The shadow no longer belongs to us; it confronts us, slips away, transforms. The visitor is immersed in sensory disruption—only by crossing through chaos can equilibrium be reached. A second laser guides the transition, inviting us to enter the next stage.
3. Reconciliation. Balance
Calm returns. The shadow is once again ours. Warm tones fill the room, softly revealing the contours of the space. The atmosphere becomes dense yet serene, offering a quiet emotional closure. The visitor reconnects with themselves in a recognisable, tangible dimension. The experience culminates in a moment of reflection:
WE ARE NOT WHAT LIGHT REVEALS. WE ARE WHAT SHADOWS KEEP SILENT.
Technical architecture of the project. El Observatorio is a continuously evolving environment, designed to support experimental lighting systems and ephemeral installations. For AlterEcho, a highly adaptable technical setup was implemented:
Dynamic lighting: digital neon flex LED strips with point-by-point control, applied across the entrance metal panels, perimeters and the central circle.
Laser narrative: two laser systems choreographed to support the emotional and spatial journey.
Atmosphere and density: a haze machine enhances the volume and physicality of the light.
Control and software: full integration via Art-Net and DMX, with content created in After Effects and mapped live through MadMapper.
AlterEcho is not just an installation—it is an invitation to explore our emotional architecture through light. At Light & Studio, we continue to learn from light and its endless potential to question not only how we see… but who we are.
